The Utility Research Lab is an interdisciplinary research group within the ATLAS Institute and Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder. We invent and investigate digital manufacturing technology, tools, and techniques. The lab’s research combines computational fabrication, materials science, and sustainable design practices. Our goal is to advance science and engineering while positively impacting people, society, and the environment.

📢 We are looking for three PhD students for Fall 2025 to work at the intersection of digital manufacturing and sustainability!

Recent Work

Our research examines materials alongside hardware and software systems. Applications of our work take on many forms including traditional interactive systems (sensors, actuators, and displays), smart textiles, and computational design tools. Our results are typically published in Human-Computer Interaction reseach venues such as ACM CHI, UIST, DIS and IMWUT.
